GETTING FIT AS A FAMILY 04.15.2014

We have all heard the saying, ” A family that prays together stays together.” I also have my own motto, “A family should get fit together and stay fit together.” In my experience, I have found that it is quite difficult for one family member to stay fit or eat healthy if the whole family is not willing to take part in the lifestyle change. As mothers, it is impossible to shop for each individual family member. Our grocery bill would be tremendously high. How do we get fit as a family and it still be cost-effective?

Getting fit as a family does not have to be a stressful activity. You don’t have to head to your local gym or pay outrages fees for a personal trainer. As a family, you can head to your local community park for some much-needed exercise. Many parks are equipped with playgrounds, walking/running trails, soccer fields, and basketball/tennis courts. You could even take evening walks around your neighborhood, ride bikes, or roll around in some inline skates.

The physical benefits of family fitness are great. It provides quality time for family members to communicate and connect outside the home. It is a wonderful way for parents to set a healthy example for their kids. Childhood obesity has become a major concern in the United States. Kids spend more in front of the television and electronic games than they do in outside playing.

As a parent, we need to set the example for what our children should strive to be and achieve. Exercising is not just about getting fit physically but emotionally, spiritually, and mentally as well. When you feel good and look good, your outlook on life changes for the better.
